An Infestation...of Fuzz

Anyone know how to calm unreasonable fears in 20-month-olds?

It’s causing bath issues.

I know what you’re thinking: Oh no! He’s afraid of the drain!

Nope.

Okay, the water?

No.

Having his hair washed?

Nope. Hates that, but he’s not afraid of it.

My child is afraid of fuzz. “Puhzz,” to be exact. I wish I knew where the fear came from because then maybe I could fix it. I just know that one day he was in the tub, saw a little black piece of toe fuzz floating around and freaked out.

He tried to stand up. “Bug! Bug! Out!”

“It’s not a bug, it’s just a piece of fuzz. It’s okay.”

“Puhzz! Puhzz! Out! Out!” He practically climbed the wall.

So, okay. He thinks fuzz and bugs are the same thing. But where did the bug fear come from? I can think of one time he pointed out a spider and then went for it and I told hollered, “No touch!” But I also can distinctly remember holding an earthworm in my palm and encouraging him to touch it. Besides, he knows the difference between a “pie-dah” and a bug. We read Miss Spider at our house.

I guess it really doesn’t matter where this fear came from. Does anyone know how to fix it?

He won’t take a bath. Even if I get him in there, he’s only in for 30 seconds before he remembers “puhzz” and there’s not even any “puhzz” in there because I picked it all out of his toes before he got in like a freakin’ monkey.

The other night, I convinced T Junior to take a shower. His bathtub has one of those hand-held shower heads. He stood in the tub and I hosed him off.

But Tuesday night, he wanted nothing to do with the shower. In fact, he screamed and tried to hold on to the side of the tub. It was like trying to put one of the dogs in the bath.

“Baff!” he wailed.

"Alright, alright."

I ended up filling the tub a couple inches, but he wouldn’t sit down. I took a plastic food storage bowl and filled it under the faucet. Then I dumped water on him as he stood shivering, ankle-deep in non-fuzzy water.

What’s this mom to do?

A Letter to Crockpot Cookbook Writers

Dear Crockpot Cookbook Writers,
Thank you for writing a cookbook with lots of delicious, easy, and sometimes downright strange, recipes. I appreciate that you are trying to help make my day a little less hectic.

However, I DO NOT want to cook before using the crockpot. The whole point of the crockpot is so I don't have to cook.

If I wanted to brown meat and saute onions, then I would just make Hamburger Stroganoff and call it good. I want to throw a bunch of groceries in the pot, plug it in and walk away.

Just something to keep in mind for the future.
Sincerely,
Kerrie T.

The Winner Is...

Congratulations! Erica is the winner of the Sally Huss Bib Giveaway!

Here's what Erica said:
"OK so I have been totally complaining about the rice issue here too. Audrey loves it as well and we have like 30 different bibs at this point. I had the same issue with the pockets not staying open..and then if they did catch something it gets all nasty in there...gross! So of course I had to check out Sally's site. First off I love her little magnets and notepads...who doesn't like those..they'd make cute stocking stuffers too! Then I checked out the bibs..and you're right they are adorable! I especially like the "cookie tester" one! I will be ordering one of these if I don't win....as what mom isn't looking for anything to control the mess! Thanks for sharing your great find!"

So glad you'll be able to put the bib to good use, Erica!
(Please e-mail me your address so Sally can send you a bib. kerrie at sanitydepartment dot com)

This was fun. More giveaways ahead!

Thank You!

Thanks to everyone who entered my Sally Huss Bib Giveaway. A winner will be selected tomorrow.

I'm gonna do it the "old-fashioned" way: write down your names on small pieces of paper and then draw one out of a hat. Mr. T will officiate. The winner will be announced shortly after that.

Good luck!

Sally Huss Bibs Review & Giveaway!

I decided. Rice is the absolute worst thing to clean up after a toddler is done eating. I used to think it was broccoli. No, it is rice. It glues itself to every surface and then quickly dries up. When you go to pick it off, it pulls everything else with it: fabric, hair, skin.

But T Junior loves to eat “bice.” And I stupidly give it to him.

A few nights ago, we had sticky rice and what we jokingly call chicken candy. (Orange chicken from the frozen section at Costco, which is so yummy and easy to make, by the way. Hmmm…maybe a future review.) Normally, if we have rice, I dread clean up.

So after dinner the other night, I was delighted to hear Mr. T exclaim, "No rice on your pants! Good job, buddy!" while I was loading the dishwasher.

I looked up as Mr. T removed T Junior’s new bib. "It's because that bib rocks!"

"This bib does rock," he enthusiastically agreed. Seriously. I never thought we'd get so excited over a bib. Who are we?

Oh yeah, parents.

But these bibs that my mom gave T Junior do rock. There's no other way to say it. Well, no other short way to say it. The long version:

I am so in love with these bibs that I contacted the artist who designs them. I've never done that before for this blog. But I decided in 2010, when I like something, I am going to find out more about it and share it with YOU. I want to make life easier for us. And, as Elle Woods would say, “funner!”

Turns out, that's basically Sally Huss's philosophy, too. The artist and author (and tennis champion/instructor to the stars!) is all about happiness. Her artwork is colorful and whimsical. One of her paintings was even on the wall in the White House, according to her Web site.

A couple of days after I e-mailed the company for details about the bib, Sally herself, sent me the information I was looking for plus offered to donate a bib to give away (details at the end of this review). I didn't expect to hear back from the designer! Then, as I was writing my review one day, my cell rang. It was Sally! Just calling to make sure I had everything I need. What a pleasant surprise!

The bibs come in two sizes: Stage 1, for 3-12 months, and Stage 2, for 6 months and up, and are available at her e-store, fittingly named, The Happy Store. T Junior has two Stage 2 bibs.

"I've done over 100 designs in all the time I've created the art for the bibs," Sally told me in her e-mail. "Each line is replaced by the next. So at any time there are 6 designs in the small size and 6 in the larger size. All are fun and happy like all of my art."

I love Sally’s bright and cheery artwork on the front of the bibs, but I also appreciate the logistics of how these bibs work. The front of the bib is slick, the back is matte and soft. According to Sally, the bibs are made of a non-toxic vinyl. I've found that almost no food sticks to them. Not rice, not spaghetti, not even Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. Food that doesn't quite make it into your child's mouth simply slides down into the pocket.

But this is not your average bib pocket.

First, allow me to gripe about bib pockets. Just for a sec. In my experience, most of the pockets on bibs don’t stay open and the food falls into T Junior’s lap anyway. Or, the food gets in the pocket and then I have to stick my hand in there to clean it out later. Or, I can’t get it out and there’s a nasty build-up of old, dried pieces of hot dog and macaroni. I've seen some hard plastic bibs with pockets that stay open, but I never purchased one because they seem bulky and difficult to store.

The Sally Huss bibs have a patented button closure that creates a pocket. The buttons turn the fabric into what I would describe as an upside down triangle so that the pocket opening does what it’s supposed to do: stay open to catch food.

This is why we didn’t have to pick sticky rice off of T Junior’s jeans after dinner the other night. Instead, I took the bib off, walked to the sink and simply unsnapped the pocket to let the rice fall down the drain. Then I ran the flattened bib under the hot tap. I set it on the counter and dried it with a towel. Voila! Done! No extra laundry, no disgusting food remnants all over my hand.

Because it’s so easy to clean, I don’t need the 20 cloth bibs that I was rotating from kid to laundry a bazillion times a day.

I admit, though, that the first time I went to re-snap the pocket, I panicked a little. I thought, Crap! How was this buttoned? But it only took me about 5 seconds to figure it out because they color-coded the buttons so you can see which ones match up. Smart!

Turns out I’m not the only one that happened to. "You should have seen Kirk Douglas figure out the snapping pattern to make the pouch," Sally said in her e-mail. "He wouldn't let me show him. He was playing with the bibs that were destined for his son, Michael and Catherine Zeta-Jones', new baby at the time."

I’ve never met Kirk, of course, but I can totally picture this! Can't you?

Sanity Department: 2010 Edition!

T Junior on Christmas morning at "Ma'amamas Howse."

There are some changes in store for this site. Here are my Year 2010 Goals for the NEW & IMPROVED Sanity Department!

A NEW LOOK & PURPOSE
This site started out as a place for me to vent and reach out as a new mom. Now that I am 1-1/2 years into being a mother, I feel I've got it down most of the time. I sort of know what I'm doing. Sort of. That's why I haven't been writing as much here. Every day is not the adventure it used to be. That's not a bad thing, but it just doesn't make for exciting content. My daily adventures in running have kind of taken over at Mom vs. Marathon.

What will I be focusing on here? I'll still be writing about all kinds of mom stuff, but I'll also be writing more about writing. Currently, I'm working on a non-fiction book about my running adventures. I'd love to share that experience with you here and at MVM. In fact, the two sites will probably cross paths more often.

In addition, I want to focus more on reviews here and I'd like to do some giveaways of the things I love. I won't post daily, but I will promise to post at least once a week.

Sanity Department needs a face lift. I can't promise it'll be a fancy-schmancy makeover, but I can promise a fresh, new header, and new links in the sidebars. New photos, more photos! I also would like to point out that the changes won't be made overnight. They'll be gradual. Just being realistic.

What else would you like to read about or see? Please let me know!

SANITY SAVER REVIEWS
Sometimes I find things that I can't live without. I always mean to share them here, but often I get distracted by life, a toddler, my running blog...you know how it goes. But for 2010, I will be sharing anything and everything that helps me keep my sanity on a daily basis. I've got a list going in my head, but the first one most likely will be this amazing bib T Junior received for Christmas.

And if you have a sanity saver that you want to write about on your blog, e-mail me, kerrie (at) sanitydepartment (dot) com, and I will link to it here! Let's spread the word on things that make life easier!
