A couple of months ago, I started singing it while dressing him because... well, putting his clothes on is a bit like doing "The Hokey Pokey" dance.
I put your right arm in;Now, when I start to sing this to him, he stops moving around and stares at me with wide eyes. My mom observed this recently and told me he's watching my mouth as I sing it as if he's trying to learn the words.
you take your right arm out;
I put your right arm in and you shake it all about.
We do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around;
that's what it's all about! Yaaaay!
"Look, lady, I don't just give smiles out for free, OK?"
"Yaaaay!" is one of his favorite parts. I have to make sure I'm finished dressing him before that because when he hears "Yaaaay!" he kicks, waves his arms and lets out a squeal of delight that makes me laugh every time.
A couple of days ago, I sang "The Hokey Pokey" to him as he stood on my lap. Standing is one of his most favorite things to do. (Why do I have this feeling that this kid is going to walk before he crawls?) He stared at me. I wiggled him a little to make him "dance" to the song. After "Yaaaay!" he threw his head back and laughed and laughed. I kept singing and he kept laughing.
Baby laughter is so adorable. It's such a pure sound.
This was a special moment because it's been a long time since I first heard him laugh. It was way back on August 15! Plus, Grandma was here to witness it.
Do you remember when your baby first laughed? Or, do you have a favorite funny time with baby?

I totally remember the first time D laughed. I wasn't home ... but Ryan has it on video. I guess it was lucky he was taping him at the exact moment that he laughed. It was the cutest thing ever. I still watch it and marvel at how far we have come since then.
ReplyDeleteI remember Ella's first time watching my mouth moving, too. It's a real connection of learning.
ReplyDeleteElla LOVES when I sing my version of "How Much is that Doggy in the Window?" I insert baby for doggy and one of the lines is, "The one with the high-pitched wail" instead of "The one with the wiggly tail." And I bark.
L can get her laughing, too, like no one else can just by being himself. And now she has this call she does specifically for him when he leaves her sight. Remember the velociraptors in the first "Jurassic Park?" When they kinda bark/called to each other? It's like that, only high-pitched:)
